Lacey + Colin {engaged}

I have so many great couples to photograph this year and Lacey and Colin are definitely one of them. Lacey starts the shoot with telling me how she is no good at serious photos which makes sense because she is so giddy and cheerful. However, I think some of the best photos are their serious ones! These two must just sit around doing nothing but laughing; keep it up and you will have a very happy life together. Normally I am the one with the silly ideas for photos but Lacey was beating me to. She wanted to sit on the chickens and then they even pretended they were racing. We also found this life size plastic horse that Lacey rode as Colin gave it a drink. Photographing these two was like watching a play unfold right before my eyes. Thanks Lacey and Colin for all the laughs I look forward to your wedding in the fall.
After Lacey and Colin's photo were up on the blog they emailed me this:

Erin,

You’ve done an outstanding job! Lacey was on her way home from work today when she asked me if the pictures were on the blog yet - we had both been checking on an hourly basis throughout the day J. When she found out the pics were up, she raced home (though she claims only 10 mph over the speed limit).

We’re both very excited about the photos – you made us feel comfortable in front of the camera, and we had a lot of fun. You did a great job picking a location that matched our personality, and we hope you had as much fun as we did.

We look forward to having you at our wedding in October. And, if we happen to win the lottery between now and October 18th, we’d love to have you photograph our honeymoon in Paris!

Regards, Colin & Lacey

{Diane + Doug picnic reception}

This was so much fun and such a great contrast to the wedding Diane and Doug had last weekend. There was lots of food, an artist, balloons, bubbles, games and lots of happy faces. Congratulations again Diane and Doug!

{biker Noah}

Here is another little guy that I have been photographing every year. I shot Kerri and Norman's wedding about 4 years ago and then have been documenting Noah's life ever since. It is so much fun for me to watch a family grow. What an honored to get called back every year! Thank you so much! Well as you can see Noah is quit the little trickster. We could not manage to get him off his bike so you will see this guy again in a few weeks with out the bike.

If you would like to read more about who I am check out iknowamom and see the interview I just did. I hope you {enjoy} it! I would love to know what you all think so leave a comment.

cheers, erin

The Original Whatever

What follows is a brief zygote of an idea. Once a week I will be posting snap shots of my current writing project. All post will be titled “The Original Whatever”.

So I get to be a writer, of sorts, so they tell me, pending government approval of my tax status. This will make a lot of people pretty damn cynical and mad about the current state of writing in this country. Let me give you a list of reasons why I should not be a writer.

1. I am a terrible speller; even with the use of spellchecker I am still dreadfully bad at spelling. A fear of mine is that I actually write a book that people buy and I have to go to book signings and the public discovers that I cannot spell anyone’s name correctly when autographing their copy of my book.

2. “There”, “their” and that third spelling of “they’re” all mean the same thing to me. I toss “their”, “there” and “they’re” anywhere and hope for the best.

3. The use of commas, apostrophes and remembering to add “s” on to the end of plural words remain a mystery to me. Thank goodness for my Editor-at-Large, Elizabeth (my wife who can spell magnificently and totally gets the “their”, there”, “they’re” thing.)

4. My friends who actually want to be writers, who have degrees in writing, who have a trilogy of already completed novels, edited and saved on their computers, will be furious with me that I got published before them. (p.s. these friends are way better at spellchecker and grammar pro combined.) I am always calling them and asking “how do you spell that” and “what’s that wavy ~ symbol used for again”) Yep they will want to kick my ass and I will not even use my superhero powers of Creative Non-Fiction Man to protect myself. I deserved it.

Lauren and Kevin :: June 7, 2008

fun without power

Yes - 06-07-08! What an awesome date to be married! And awesome it was! Lauren and Kevin's wedding is by far the most eventful and crazy wedding I ever encountered in my life!

The day started out in the mid 80's - hot, sunny and humid. I was happy when I entered the church to find out that the AC was on full blast! Lauren and her girls were getting ready in the bride's room and Kevin and his guys were in the parking lot decorating their pick-up trucks.

The first challenge of the day came from the pastor of the church. I wasn't allowed to come up the middle aisle for any part of the ceremony. That meant I couldn't be in my usual spot for the rings, the unity candle or the kiss! Luckily the pastor allowed me to be half way up on the side aisles... I captured the exchanging of the rings from the right aisle and Jason Samsa (a photographer shadowing and second shooting) covered it from the left aisle. I ended up sitting as a guest in the pew for the kiss and popped out at the last moment to get an awesome shot from the center. I was able to capture all the moments as they happened and from a more unique angle.

After the ceremony and receiving line we were ready to start shooting the group formals. At that exact moment the tornado sirens started to blast. I hurried and completed all the family and wedding party poses. After the last group the power flickered and eventually the church lost all power. The sirens went off again and eventually everyone that was left in the church found their way to the basement.

Sometimes challenges can lead to more creativity in the way I shoot and not having access to light is a major challenge! Another challenge was to keep the momentum of the day from dying out. So we played! Jason came up with a great idea of painting with light. I had all the bridesmaids and the bride open up their cell phones and trace letters in the air while I photographed them with a long exposure. The results were fantastic!!! We had soooo much fun and it made the one and a half hours in the basement of the church go by without stress.

We finally made our way to the reception hall, thank goodness the power was on! I was able to shoot about 15min outdoors with no rain. I decided to stay past my end time to get some outdoor shots of the bride and groom alone. It was worth staying the extra hour to get beautiful images of Lauren and Kevin on the golf course.

{Molly + Nick = engaged}

One day I was working out at the gym and I saw Molly working out and I though she is so cute and would be great to photograph. So I asked her and found out she is even engaged! We set out to St. Paul at sunset to do something different. I want to to do night photos to try out my new video light. Well it was a blast and Molly and Nick did an incredible job. Now this is a girl with some spunk. They will be getting married in Mexico and when they come back I am hoping to do a bridal session with them too. Watch for some more photos in the fall. Congratulations Molly and Nick and thanks for letting me take your photographs.
