Photographing in Manual Mode, So What

One of the things I like best about owning my own business are those rare days of a perfect life.

During conversations when people find out that I am a photographer their response is always the same: what a life. True, it’s a good life.

People believe that I work two or three days a week. If the camera is not in my hands then I am not working (oh how I wish that was true).

In my workshops one of the main points that I drill into the students' heads is
“ The least important thing you need to take a photograph is the camera.”

Second point:
“photograph the light first and compose the subject second.”

Third, as of yet unreleased drilling point,
“give up on using the word
perfection and replace it with the word practice.”

Photography is the art of seeing, observing and creating something new...daily. There is no beginning or end to my workday; I am thankful for that.

After a morning of e-mails, internet research and photo editing I went for a walk, a very cold walk with my dog. During this walk I had this thought – photographing in Manual mode, so what? For the better part of my photography career I have been taking it as a point of pride that I shoot in Manual mode and that I am a creative problem solver of light...so what... blah, blah, blah…..that’s what you are supposed to do dummy, nothing to brag about.

It was a rare perfect day ~ it’s a great feeling when the ordinary becomes profound.

Help for Haiti

Photography Workshop with David Burke & me.

David & I have decided to donate 100% of the last 3 seats available to our workshop to Help the people of Haiti. It is times like these when we realize how truly blessed we are. My heart goes out to all of the people affected by this recent tragedy. It is impossible for me to sit there and just feel bad without doing anything. Every little bit will help and the full $175 registration fee for the last 3 available seats will go to Haiti.

If you are on the fence about coming to learn and make connections, now is your chance to benefit others with your decision. We would love to have you and would be honored to team up with you on the efforts to help the country of Haiti.

Pop Music, Jazz Music & Photography

Snow in, order sushi open a bottle of Chilean wine, had great conversation with ”E” during dinner the other night.

Discussing what photographers can learn from bad pop music, great jazz musicians and how that can influence your photography.

Bad pop music is when you use all that technology has to offer. You surround the music with typical structure, format and repetition.

Bad pop music is when there is no separation or original sound of your own produced. Yes you can play your instrument and yes you can sing. However there is no creativity or innovation to what you bring to your craft.

Think about all that music you used to love years ago and now when you hear it you are embarrassed that you ever liked it.

Bad pop music; it lacks authentic engagement.

A jazz musician is somebody who knows and works the fundamentals of their instrument. Nevertheless who has their eye on culture, youth and perspective to see where sound is moving.

A jazz musician is pushing the boundaries to see where music can go. More often than not when you purchase a jazz album you may not like it or even get it at first, but with time the music becomes magical to your ears.

What can photographers learn from that??

Create something new today….

Motivation 3.0

Motivation just had an upgrade to version 3.0. Who knew words could be upgraded? Dan Pink has written a book on the subject and Jonathan Fields has posted an informative interview with Pink (See Here).

Effort and purpose seems to be a major working theme to 3.0 version of motivation. Motivation 1.0 is about staying alive. Still a very good motivator, version 2.0 is about salary and 3.0 is about mastery, purpose, engagement and self-sufficiency.

Motivation 3.0 is about “How to be a Working Artist”, a subject near and dear to my heart.

Chase Jarvis has written a blog post on the topic:

Create > Share > Sustain> this is a post on how to be a working artist.

For myself I have been using the phrases:

~ Create something new, daily

~ Embrace a culture of sharing, daily

~ Repeat, daily.

For a sneak peek at my upcoming e-book (which is based on motivation 3.0 thinking), check out a past 5 part series of mine titled:

How I got my PHD in the “How-To-Businesses” of Photography

The year in preview ~2010

We have been slowly dipping our toes into using a studio space over the past year. In 2010 we will be making a larger commitment to this studio space. It’s an odd thing to make this announcement because we are not opening a studio, but utilizing a space that will have many uses beyond a shooting and office space. Are we working nine to five? No. Is this a retail studio? No.

I have been using the phrase “open-hand-philosophy” to describe how I live and work. “Collaborate rather than compete” is a good explanation of how I wish to think of my work for 2010. 2009 has been the year of community building, networking and overall making new friends who push me creatively, professionally and personally. Thank you all for that!

What is this space? A second-floor walkup with good light, high ceilings and hardwood floors. It is an experiment to be explored throughout the coming months. The list below is what I hope to achieve with this space. Will it all work? Not sure. But I want share the journey with you.

Wedding (portraiture, consultations, First reveals)
Portraits ~ seniors, family

Photographer’s Blog Class ~ All January 2010

You will learn:
Are you struggling with:
~ Finding business
~ Finding time to market/brand/ advertise

~ Finding time to shoot

Due to scheduling conflicts & previous one-on-one sessions I have decided to cancel the Purposeful Blogging Workshop and instead will be doing small group classes (4 people or less) or one-on-one sessions.

Prices will stay the same $55.00 for the class (be it small group or one-on-one) you choose.

Why the change? Privacy ~ Over the past year of doing the one-on-one session it has been beneficial to the photographer to be able to ask business questions that publicly they would not be comfortable sharing.

Location: 502 W. North Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Cost: $55. 00
Length of class: 3 hours, give or take
Contact: Elizabeth Craig at 724.355.9079 or by email at craigphotography@mac.com

Question

~ What is the “It Quality ” that creates separations between you and other photographers in your market?

~ What has changed in the photography market in the last year?

Craig Photography by Elizabeth
David Burke Shoot N' Learn

On Building a Photo Community

I have a passion for photography; a love for the business that Elizabeth and I built and a commitment to the next generation to leave it stronger and healthier.

About a year and half ago on a cold night after being frustrated about not being able to find a parking spot, I walked late into David Burke’s studio where he was holding a Shoot N’ Learn networking group. That night was the catalyst for what I am trying to achieve today. I thought David’s working title for his group, “Shoot N’ Learn”, was perfect. In addition to that title I wanted to pair it with “Connect and Develop”.

The characteristics that I hope to instill upon the community will be:

~ Passion for learning
~ Effort and discipline
~ Good health; mental & physical
~ Foster a love for getting outdoors
~ Service to others
~ Using your camera in Manual without having to drudge through reading the manual.

What I am proposing to change about photography education is the “how” and “why” in the ways that we learn.

Two core principles for the photo community are:
Shoot N’ Learn
Connect and Develop

Create something new. That’s it, that is my goal to collectively achieve. Daily I am asked the same question, “What camera should I buy?” The question that should be asked is “How do I use my camera?” You cannot purchase your way to being a better photographer; the best camera to own is the camera in

your hand. Technology is great and it has pushed the frontier of photography into new and better directions. But the past is the foundation that needs to be deeply explored and understood.

There is a need to understand the Manual aspect of using a camera. A camera is a tool and I want people to understand how to use it, properly.

The reason to build this community is to discover what ideas need to be fulfilled. To connect people with problems to the people who have answers. This community is to position those for success, (whatever you deem success to be) not a guaranteed success, but to permit and promote it in others and ourselves.

The community will generate conversations in which we will can gain feedback, learn, connect and grow. The only guiding rules for the community are to be authentic, to listen, and respond by doing some good for society. And lastly to learn how to take remarkable photos.

For me, personally, this photo community will be successful when it is not the last word on photography but the first words; the starting place.

I invite you to join in on this ~ connect with me on facebook (HERE)
